Sanayaima preaches peaceful co-existence

Imphal, December 12 2011: Chairman of the UNLF RK Sanayaima has categorically stated that no problems, whether it is the demand for alternative arrangement or creation of Sadar Hills district, can be solved until the people learn to live in peace and harmony.

He was speaking to media persons today at the premises of NIA Court at Guwahati.

He stated that it was because of the valley people's maturity that there was no violent reaction to the more than 100 days long economic blockade imposed on the National Highways leading to Imphal.

Home Minister P Chidambaram's assertion that there was no protest against the blockade smacked of sheer irresponsibility, Sanayaima remarked.

In the last 60 years of Indian rule, only seeds of distrust and misunderstanding have been sown on the soil of Manipur.

In their craze for quotas given to SC/ST/OBC, people have turned against each other.

When different communities have been working on communal lines, the valley people have been refraining from such narrow and vicious politics, he asserted.

Observing that valley people are not allowed to settle in the hills while all the communities can make their settlements in the valley, the rebel leader noted that the existing form of governance does not provide room for peaceful co-existence and collective progress.

If this form of governance goes on, it would not be long before both the hill people and valley people sink together.

Stating that no adequate investment has been made in Manipur till date, Sanayaima underscored the need to mobilise and exploit the resources available in Manipur for economic development of the State.

Ruling out any possible benefit to Manipur from India's Look East Policy, he pointed out that the same policy was driven by economic globalization.

There is no infrastructure in Manipur which can absorb the impact of economic globalization.

Economic globalization would cause adverse impacts on underdeveloped and developing nations.

If Manipur should get any benefit from the Look East Policy, there is a need to formulate another Look East Policy exclusively for Manipur or the North East region, he stated.

Out of the Look East Policy, Manipuri people can get employment in the form of opening pan shops or working as porters at the most.

Such Look East Policy would be disastrous for underdeveloped nations and it would also give a serious impact on the socio-cultural patterns of indigenous societies.

Highlighting that Tipaimukh Dam would spell doom for the eco-system of Manipur, Sanayaima asserted that the dam would not facilitate export of the State's water resources but would also open a floodgate of economic exploitation.

People need to launch a massive movement against Tipaimukh Dam, he stated.

The location of Tipaimukh Dam is within a highly active seismic zone.

As such, the dam may cause catastrophe any time if it is constructed, he cautioned.

It would more prudent to focus on small and mini hydel projects which can small and medium scale industries, he added.

Along with RK Meghen alias Sanayaima, M Joy, N Mani, O Somorjit, S Rakesh, W Noren, M Sarat, Kh Jiten, S Gune, M Ibohal, Ch Bembem, O Maniton, L Jateshor and Th Prem were produced at the NIA Court.

They were produced before the Court to hear their defence Counsel's argument.

The defence Counsel citing certain inconveniences pleaded before the Court to postpone the hearing for some days.

After listening to the defence Counsel, the Court fixed December 26 for the next hearing.
