Imphal, July 12 2024:
Asserting that subjecting inmates of rehabilitation centres to physical assault is a violation of human rights, the Union of Treatment and Rehabilitation of Users for Social Transformation (U-TRUST) has appealed to the relevant authorities to look into the matter and uphold the rights of people seeking recovery from addictions.
Speaking to the media at Koubru Hall of Manipur Press Club today, U-TRUST vice president Naorem Budhha said that assaulting patients at rehab centres and picking up addicts for treatment illegitimately not only violate the rights of the people but also tarnish the image of all rehab centres operating in the State.

He said that U-TRUST received a report of some inmates being harassed at a rehab centre called Punshi Lambi at Patsoi Part-1 on July 9 .
Saying that they went to the rehab centre shortly after and found some of the inmates there were picked up illegitimately, Budhha added that they rescued six patients from Punshi Lambi and referred them to another centre certified by the Social Welfare Department.
The condition at which the inmates were staying at the rehab centre was unsafe, he said while elaborating why the six persons were referred to another centre.
Continuing that they have been trying to contact the service providers of Punshi Lambi after the incident, he added that the rehab centre, however, was found closed when they went there for an enquiry.
He appealed to the authorities concerned to keep an eye on the said rehab centre and take up corrective measures as needed.
