Understanding human rights and duties mooted

Imphal, January 10 2015 : The Centre for Human Rights & Duties Education, Manipur University has concluded its three-day training programme on Human Rights at the lecture hall of the centre on Saturday.

The valedictory function was attended by Prof H Nandakumar Sarma, Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University as chief guest; Dr M Sureshkumar, coordinator of Centre for Human Rights & Duties Education, MU as president; Prof N Lokendra, Registrar of MU and L Kailun, IGP (Zone II) as guests of honor.

Addressing the gathering, Prof Nandakumar observed that the rate of human rights violation could be reduced drastically if people are well aware of rights and duties enshrined in the Constitution while asserting that human rights should be respected by all.

He maintained that the number of country where human rights is not violated is few, raising needs for prompt intervention to curb the menace.

The rate of human rights violation in India is high which is due to lack of education and awareness, the Vice-Chancellor added.

RK Ranendrajit, editor of Freedom who was present at the occasion as special invitee said that there is a communication gap between security forces and public in the State which needs to be filled so as to thwart any unwanted incident that could create havoc in the society.

He pointed out that loophole in the present system has led to strains in the relationship between the security forces and public which needs to be addressed.

Given the unwarranted situation, it is high time to train police personnel in proper manner to establish cordial relationship with the public, he asserted.

Stating that adherence to work ethics should be the top priority for media persons in a democratic country; he said that the incident of human rights violation can be avoided if people belonging to different sections clearly understand its rights and duties.

Ibotombi Khuman, president of IPSA and Dr Dhanabir Laishram, political scientist were also present during the function as special invitees.
