Lamka/Imphal, January 08 2015: The dog-biting spree continued but with a lesser number today even as fear of rabies has gripped the people with officials pulling up their sleeves to control the menace.

Veterinary doctors have begun vaccinating dogs while a medical team from Imphal started administering anti-rabies vaccine to the dog bite victims in the district today.

Health Services and National Health Mission Director, O Ibomcha told The Sangai Express that a medical team under Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme has been sent to Churachandpur district today to collect detailed report and to administer anti-rabies vaccine to the dog bite victims.

Pointing out that all efforts are put in place to tackle the menace in the district, he said that 100 stocks of anti-rabies vaccine have been stockpiled.

Another 200 vaccines have also been ordered from Delhi, the Director said.

At the same time, veterinary doctors have also started vaccinating dogs in the district.

Three people were treated today at the district hospital while one of them was a fresh case, the other two got bitten sometime in November-December last year.

Sources in the hospital said that one among two old cases, identified as Letminthang (8) has been admitted in the hospital as the attending doctor wants further examination by paediatricians as he reported discomfort in the area exposed to dog-bite.

He was reportedly bitten on November 20 last.

Nevertheless, no sign and symptoms of rabies have been noticed on the boy, added the source.

The two other patients identified as Khampu (24) of New Lamka and Lalboi (4) of Zellang Veng have left the hospital after receiving anti-rabies vaccine.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the Rapid Action Team has fine-tuned their responsibilities with the SP office tasked with providing a truck to ferry unattended dogs caught by the mobile team.

The team is said to have begun their duty from today but it is not known if they have returned with any catch or not.

They have also decided to focus on New Lamka and NKT area as maximum cases are said to have been reported from this area.

The RATs actual activities will be monitored by Maniram Sharma, Additional DC Churachandpur.
