Imphal, July 07 2024: With clogging of drainage systems becoming a common phenomenon in the State, Heingang SDC Premanandi Okram has sought cooperation from the people to reduce future flood risks in Manipur.

She also said that the cooperation of the people is equally important to implement any flood management plan to prevent flooding.

Notably, the Government has been dismantling culverts and other structures constructed over drainage systems since July 3 following the recurrence of floods in many areas of Imphal and other valley districts to clear solid materials blocking the drain channels.

Today, Imphal East district administration carried out a similar drive along with dozens of volunteers from Chingemeirong Mamang Leikai to the area opposite to ISBT at Khuman Lampak and dismantled several culverts built over the drainage system in the area.

Speaking to the media by the sideline, Premanandi said that the drain channel which they cleaned today falls into Nambul River after passing through several areas.

Saying that flooding is not only caused by breach of rivers, she added that clogging of drainage systems is also one of the major causes of flood in Manipur.

She appealed to the people to not throw bottles and garbage in drains.

Meanwhile, chairman of Tangkhul Avenue Ngaranmi said that they support the initiative being taken up by the Government to dismantle culverts and other structures erected over drain channels to ensure smooth flow of water.

He, however, appealed to the Government to take up a work programme to rebuild the dismantled culverts.
