Imphal, January 06: Unidentified gunmen pumped in a bullet on the leg of a lecturer of the DM College of Commerce, after having escorted him from the class room where the TDC Second Year Examination was in progress, near the gate of the former office of the Directorate of Education (S) at about 11.55 am today.

The lecturer is identified as one Aribam Devidas Sharma (32) of Bramhapur Aribam Leikai.

He has joined as a lecturer in the college in April last year.

Reports said that Devidas was on duty as invigilators in room no 21 along with assistant librarian Nabakumar where the examination of the TDC second year on the paper 'Communication Skill' was in progress.

The timing of the examination was from 9 am to 12 noon and the main gate of the college was locked while the examination was in progress till the warning bell rings at 11.55 am.

The unknown assailants who were apparently waiting to gain entry and walked up to Devidas who was standing at the veranda taking a wisp of fresh air and escorted him out of the college campus on the pretext of having some private talks.

Outside the campus another unknown person joined them and look Devidas towards the narrow by lane running between the building which used to serve as the office of the Directorate of Edn (S) and the PG College of Teacher Education.

As they reached the gate of the office, one of the gunmen took out a pistol and pumped one bullet into the calf of his right leg without saying anything.

When Devidas insisted to know why they were doing that to him, the assailant had reportedly told him that the reason would be known from the newspaper later on.

After the assailants have left, Devidas was rushed to the Shija Clinic at Langol for treatment.

The bullet had pierced though his calf but he is said to be out of danger.

Devidas said that he has not the slightest idea why he had been shot.

It was rather surprising and far beyond his comprehension, he said.

To a question, Devidas ruled out that the incident has anything to do with abetting or encouraging used of unfair means in the examination.

On the contrary, he said, he has been rather strict in this regard and had seized notes from six students including a girl.

Meanwhile, the Joint DM College Students Union and the teachers of DM College of Arts, Science and Commerce have condemned the incident strongly.

During a joint press 'conference convened later in the evening the teachers while asserted that Devidas was a dutiful teacher, though they knew nothing about of his private life if there is any.

Demanding an explanation for the violent action, the teachers maintained that the incident has shocked and taken them by surprised.

Lamenting that the post of the principal of DM College of Commerce has been lying vacant since Dec 3 last year following the retirement of its former principal Khalik, they wondered to whom they should complaint for today's incident.
