Imphal, June 05 2025:
Manipur University Vice Chancellor Prof N Lokendra has underscored the need for every stakeholder to introspect and work collectively so as to bring about a quality university system in the State.
Speaking at the 45th foundation day of Manipur University and World Environment Day observation at the university's auditorium today, Prof N Lokendra recalled that MU started its journey as a PG Centre of JNU with just 10 departments and three schools of studies.
Now MU has nine schools of studies, 47 departments, one constituent college and 120 affiliated colleges.

Although the university has produced a large number of students, there is a need to emphasise on the quality of students, the VC said.
There is a need to work with a strong determination to create a quality teaching-learning system, produce quality publications and bring about a quality university system, he said.
MA Programme on Human Rights was introduced under the Law Department from the last academic session.
Human rights is a key aspect of Manipur and the entire North East region, he said.
There is a need to sensitise the public, security personnel and media on human rights, Prof Lokendra said.
The VC announced that the university has been working to open an MA in Myanmar & China Studies programme under South East Asian Studies Department.
Considering the fact that Manipur is still quite backward in the field of manufacturing industry, MU firmly believes that agroforestry can be a strong foundation for the economic growth of Manipur and the North East region, he said.
Agro-forestry is one area where students, scientists and faculties can work productively with a far-sighted vision, he said.
"Given the rapid changes seen across the world, there is a need to review our disciplines.
We must also modify our syllabus as well as curriculum in line with the National Credit Framework", the VC said.
Stability has now returned to MU which was once marred by multiple issues.
Now academic sessions are commenced and exam results are declared on time, he said.
MU would welcome all initiatives aimed at enhancing human knowledge, socio-economic development of the State, the VC said.
Some decades back, Manipur was a peaceful and clean State but today the State is highly filthy because of urbanisation, he observed.
Urbanisation and modernisation are something which cannot be avoided but these developments should be preceded by a comprehensive plan including proper sewerage system and a strong commitment to protect the environment, Prof Lokendra continued.
The VC also presented Manipur University Media Awards 2024-25 to Hueiyen Lanpao Sub-Editor Bijoy Laishram and SKTC News Chief Reporter Ksh Premchand.
