MCPCR takes note of allegations against school

Imphal, August 04 2026: After serious allegations of inadequate supply of food, water and other basic amenities at the Loktak Project Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) surfaced, the Principal has been relieved of his duties and the Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) has ordered a probe.

The matter shall be treated as "MOST URGENT" and a detailed factual report along with an Action taken Report (ATR) shall be submitted to the Commission within 48 hours, said the MCPCR ordering the probe in letters to the Deputy Commissioner of Churachandpur and Director, Tribal Affairs and Hills today.

Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) provide free, high-quality residential middle and high school education to Scheduled Tribe (ST) students.

Reports said students at the residential school at Zeikhuluang Loktak Project were allegedly not given proper meals, breakfast and even drinking water for several days due to "depletion of food stock" .

While few students reportedly required medical treatment, several students were taken away by worried parents.

A video which has now gone viral shows a woman complaining about the poor living conditions of the students at the residential school.

The woman alleged students were not even provided beds and were forced to sleep on the floor.

She also claimed parents were even arranging drinking water for their children.

Following the outrage that emerged, reports said the Principal of the school was relieved of his duties on August 3 by an order of the Manipur Society for Tribal Educational Institution (MSTEI) under the Tribal Affairs and Hills Department.

The Principal has been transferred and attached to the office of the Member Secretary, MSTEI, said the order.

In directions it issued to the DC Churachandpur district and Director TA & Hills today, the Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) said it has taken suo motu cognizance of reports regarding the condition at the EMRS at Zeikhuluang Loktak Project.

In view of the seriousness of the matter affecting the rights, health, nutrition, and dignity of children, the MCPCR said the Deputy Commissioner and Director TA & Hills should conduct an immediate on-site inquiry into the reported circumstances.

The authorities shall ensure immediate restoration of adequate food supplies, healthcare, safe drinking water, accommodation, and all other essential services for every resident child, it said.

Further, the authorities shall verify the adequacy of food supplies in proportion to the actual number of resident students and staff, and ascertain the reasons for the reported deficiencies.

The authorities shall fix responsibility for any lapses or negligence, if established, and initiate appropriate remedial measures, said the MCPCR .

Necessary measures to allow return of the evacuated students to the institution shall be taken up, and the authorities shall submit a detailed factual report along with an Action Taken Report (ATR) to the Commission within 48 hours of receipt of the direction, said the MCPCR .
