Construction of Tombisana Market aborted

Imphal, March 04 2025: A new market constructed at the campus of the erstwhile Tombisana High School with the primary objective of accommodating the street vendors of Khwairamband Keithel and adjoining areas has been aborted.

With funds from the Ministry of Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation, PWD took up the work of constructing the market complex during the time of Chief Minister Okram Ibobi.

The Planning and Development Authority (PDA) deposited the necessary funds with PWD and PWD started the construction work in 2014 .

Construction of Tombisana Market aborted

The original estimated amount of Tombisana Market was Rs 4933.65 lakh.

Later, the estimated amount was revised to Rs 5246.74 lakh.

Out of the estimated revised amount of Rs 5246.74 lakh, Rs 2698.81 lakh has been spent and it is inclusive of the agency charge, said a source.

But the scheme implemented by the Ministry of Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation under which funds for construction of Tombisana Market were sanctioned has expired.

As the scheme no longer exists, PWD has scrapped the project of constructing Tombisana Market, said the source.

Work order for construction of Tombisana Market was first awarded to M/S Simplex Projects.

As Simplex Projects worked on the project, human skulls were discovered from underneath the erstwhile Tombisana High School ground.

As the market construction work did not achieve much progress, the State Government issued a fresh work order to M/S Avantika.

But M/S Avantika too could not make any progress.

Moreover, funds were not released in time.

But today, all due bills of the work agency have been paid and the project has been scrapped, said the source.

It is estimated that around Rs 2209.43 lakh would be needed to complete Tombisana Market from the existing stage, said the source.
