Imphal, November 03: All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has begun the first phase of its anti-drug and alcoholism campaign in educational institutions of the four districts of the State from today.

The campaign which began from today would cover all the educational institutions in Thoubal, Bishnupur, Imphal East and Imphal West districts and it is being launched by the student body in association with representatives of student unions and teachers of the schools concerned.

According to the strictures laid down for the campaign by AMSU during one of its meetings earlier, student or teachers should abstain from consumption of intoxicants of any sort including cigarette in all the educational institutions.

Although first time offenders would be led off with a stern warning, second time offenders would be boycotted and even after the boycott if the student or the teacher fails to mend their ways, they would be rusticated from the said educational institutions for life.

Further, restriction has also been imposed on selling intoxicants of any kind within 100 metres of the educational institutions and any shop which violates the stricture would be shut down permanently.

The anti-drug and alcoholism campaign kicked off from The Fancier Abhiram Higher Secondary School in Thoubal district.

The inaugural function was attended by president of AMSU Thoubal District Committee Th Tiken and teacher of the school H Priyo as presidium members.

Giving the key note address of the function, vice president of AMSU Thoubal District Committee Depenjit Ningthoujam observed that the problem of drug abuse among students in Manipur is wide spread today, and it affects not only the health and moral character and education of the students, but also has a serious impact on the socio-economic growth of the society.

So the students, who are the future pillars from the society should be dissuaded from taking up drug habits.

Speaking at the occasion, A Tiken, a student of the school, appreciated the step being taken up by AMSU to fight against the problem of drug abuse among the students.

Though late, such efforts would help in saving many students from falling into the trap of drug and alcoholism, Tiken, who is reading in class XII said, adding that ban on selling of intoxicants in shops located within 100 metres of the premises of the schools is also in th right direction.

N Gangarani, another class XII student of the student pledged to extend all possible assistance in fighting against the menace of drug abuse and alcoholism in their school.

Along with kicking off the campaign, an Anti Drug and Alcoholism Cell has also been set up in the school today.
