State Govt works on Imphal by-pass, awaits Centre's nod

Imphal, July 02 2014: To effectively address the problem of traffic congestion in Imphal city, a bypass on NH-39 (Mao-Moreh highway) which passes through the middle of the capital city is being considered actively.

The bypass, according to its detailed project report, would be known as 'Imphal Bypass of National Highway'.

As NH-39 passes through the heart of Imphal city, it automatically entails movement of many heavy vehicles through the city thereby compounding traffic woes in the capital city.

The problem would grow manifold once the Indo-Myanmar border trade grows to its full potential and the Trans-Asian highway becomes a reality.

Taking into consideration all these factors and possibilities, the State Government took up the initiative of constructing a new road which would enable NH- 39 to by pass Imphal city.

But it is still not clear whether the State Government's plan would see the light of the day or not as it depends on the approval of the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

The approximate length of the proposed bypass is around 26 Kms.

Even though the State Government has almost completed necessary project preparation, the proposal is yet to be sent to the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

A consultant has already completed surveying the proposed road.

Moreover, its alignment has been finalised after studying it three/four times.

Detailed design of the new road would be drawn up after the detailed project report has been compiled, said the source.

At first, the State Government planned to construct the bypass in Imphal West district.

Then the Government changed its mind and considered constructing the same bypass through Imphal East district.

Again the Government reverted its position to its earlier decision of constructing the bypass through Imphal West district.

The State Government, before adopting the final decision, studied socio-economic feasibility of the project from different angles, informed a source.

The bypass would form an integral part of the Trans-Asian Highway and the Government would acquire necessary land for its expansion in future, if not in the coming years.

The bypass which would originate from Maharabi and Tendongyang would pass by 17 villages and it would join NH-39 at Loumanbi Loukon.

The villages which the bypass would pass through are Maharabi, Tendongyang, Loitang-Leikinthabi, Mana-Ingkhol, Mayang Langjing, Ngariyanbam, Lamsang Keithel, Haorang Sabal, Heibongpokpi, Luker, Khumbong, Khabi, Phoijing Thongkhong, Langpok, Hiyangthang, Naral Konjil and Loumanbi Loukon.
