15 cops killed in 2023 violence: NCRB

Eleven police personnel were killed in Manipur during the violence in 2023, according to a report published by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) .
A total of 24 civilians were killed by extremists during that year in the North Eastern State, which witnessed ethnic conflict between Imphal Valleybased Meiteis and adjoining hills-based tribal Kukis from May 2Q23 .
"Fifteen police personnel were reported killed on duty, including 11 by riotous mobs in 2023," the report said and added that four others were killed in accidents.
The report, however, stated that no police personnel were injured during riots in 2023, even though multiple incidents of injuries from firing by suspected militants were recorded.
It said that 24 civilians were killed by extremists/in-surgents in firing, the "highest" in the country in 2023 .
The report of NCRB continued that 83 civilians were injured during attacks by armed miscreants or terrorists in the year.
Six people died in police lathicharge during riots in that year, the NCRB data showed.
It further stated that 347 guns and 3061 rounds of ammunition were seized in 2023.Manipur also reported the highest number of violent crimes in the North East in 2023 at 14,427 .
As per the report, 19,192 IPC cases were registered in 2023, bringing the total to 38,239 (including 19,047 pending cases) .
Among others, eight cases were withdrawn by the Government, and 24 were closed due to issues like non-cognizable reports or errors, the report mentioned and added that a whopping 776 cases 776 cases were dismissed due to insufficient evidence in the year.
In terms of disposal of cases by Courts in Manipur, 247 cases were sent for trial in 2023, while 5,594 remained pending trial from previous years, the report said.
