JNIMS nurse honoured with Florence Nightingale Award

Imphal, May 30 2025: Leimapokpam Ranjita Devi, a senior nursing officer at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), was conferred the prestigious National Florence Nightingale Award 2025 by the President of India Droupadi Murmu, in recognition of her exemplary service in critical care, nursing innovation, and community welfare.

The awards ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi was also attended by union health minister Jagat Prakash Nadda and ministers of state Prataprao Jadhav and Anupriya Patel.

This year, 15 nursing professionals from across the country were honoured.

The award recipients include nurses from the north-eastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Mizoram.

Ranjita Devi has been instrumental in advancing nursing protocols and healthcare delivery at JNIMS, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

She led training initiatives for staff nurses on PPE protocols, ICU care, and patient management, and designed simplified monitoring charts that enhanced patient safety and documentation.

Her efforts were crucial in developing standard operating procedures for COVID ICUs and continue to shape critical care services in the hospital.

She also played a key role in the first kidney transplant programme of the state in government-run hospitals and subsequent transplants.

She led in OT preparation for such transplants, helping JNIMS successfully carry out 50 transplants, including four cadaveric procedures.

For her contribution, she received a special recognition from the chief minister during the 76th Independence Day celebration in 2022.Beyond her clinical excellence, Ranjita has shown extraordinary courage and compassion in emergency situations and outreach activities.

She has been actively involved in diabetes awareness, palliative care for terminally ill patients, and health services for underserved communities in remote areas.

A postgraduate in nursing from Assam Down Town University, Guwahati, Ranjita has been serving at JNIMS since 2006.Her leadership, innovation, and unwavering dedication to patient care have made her a respected figure among the nursing community and a role model for healthcare professionals across the region.

The National Florence Nightingale Award, instituted by the ministry of health and family welfare, includes medal, certificate of merit, and cash prize of Rs 1 lakh.
