Imphal, June 28 2026:
Sur Musical Institute Director Gotimayum Surchandra on Sunday called for collective efforts to safeguard Manipur's rich musical heritage.
He was speaking at a World Music Day programme held at AIM Auditorium, Bamon Kampu, where a new music composition titled "Guru Bandana" was released.
Surchandra said music unites society and promotes peace, a role now recognised globally.
Manipur's heritage, he noted, ranges from Pena music to Khunung Ishei, Khullang Ishei, Sankirtan, and contemporary forms, all reflecting the State's history and identity.
These traditions must be preserved, he stressed.
He added that World Music Day should inspire artistes, musicians, and the public to take Manipur's music to new heights.
Learning music is important but without platforms to showcase talent, its purpose is lost.
Therefore, creating opportunities for performers is essential, said Surchandra.
The programme highlighted the need to promote and protect the State's musical legacy for future generations.
