Businessman Chandan first to pay property tax

Businessman Takhellambam Chandan of Chingmeirong Maning Leikai has become the first in Manipur to pay property tax under Manipur Municipalities (Property Tax) Rules 2019 by depositing the tax in advance.
Commending his sense of responsibility as a law-abiding citizen and obligation towards betterment of the society, an official team of Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) led by commissioner Joyce Kemp and deputy commissioner Thokchom Siddartha visited the residence of Chandan on Saturday and handed over a stole in appreciation of his contribution.
Speaking in this regard, Siddartha informed that property tax is levied on kutcha, semi-pucca and pucca buildings at different rates according to Manipur Municipality Act, 1994 and Manipur Municipalities (Property Tax) Rules 2019 whereas the same law will not be applicable on empty land.
Confiding that an order on payment of property tax will be issued by the government within short notice, he pointed out that the tax rate will be highest in Paona and Thangal Bazar area.
The tax amount collected will be utilised for developmental purposes, the deputy commissioner said and urged the people for cooperation and pay their property taxes.
Notice for varied rates of property tax were already issued by the government, Siddartha recalled, while adding that field survey for levying property tax in Municipality areas has been completed.
In his address, Chandan stated that he is a businessman and came across an order for paying property tax while trying to set up his shop under the jurisdiction of municipality.
As such, he paid a sum of Rs 8186.87 as property tax with a discount of 20 per cent for paying the tax in advance.
Maintaining that people should uphold rules and norms set by the government, Chandan said that he deposited the property tax in advance as he is a citizen of the state.
