RIMS begins Oral Risdiplam Therapy

The Centre of Excellence for Rare Diseases, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal, has initiated treatment with Oral Risdiplam, a high-cost diseasemodifying therapy, for two children diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) registered under the CoE.
The medicine was formally handed over to the beneficiaries by RIMS Director Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma on Monday, at the Genetic Clinic of RIMS Hospital.
This marked the first time Oral Risdiplam has been provided by RIMS CoE under the National Policy for Rare Diseases (NPRD) 2021.Officials said the milestone reflects RIMS' commitment to comprehensive care and access to advanced therapies for rare diseases, with support from the Rare Diseases Cell, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
