Tengnoupal, August 18 2026:
The Assam Rifles commemorated the 32nd anniversary of the supreme sacrifice of 18 personnel during Operation Hifazat by conducting a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at its Battalion Headquarters in Tengnoupal district on Tuesday.
According to IGAR (South), the ceremony was conducted with full military dignity and solemnity, with personnel paying homage to the fallen soldiers and remembering their courage, valour and selfless devotion to duty.
On August 18, 1994, Assam Rifles personnel operating through the challenging mountainous terrain of Yangkhonou in the Shangkohmei-Willong area near Sirohi came under an ambush by NSCN (IM) insurgents.
Despite the difficult terrain and tactical disadvantage, the troops engaged the insurgents with determination and resolve.
During the fierce encounter, 18 personnel sustained fatal bullet injuries and made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
The commemoration provided serving personnel an opportunity to remember their fallen comrades and reaffirm their commitment to the highest traditions of the Force.
The ceremony also highlighted the enduring values of camaraderie, duty, honour and sacrifice that continue to guide Assam Rifles personnel.
