Tap land resources for prosperity: Saikot MLA

Churachandpur, August 12 2022: The 5th edition of the Tangmai (cucumber) Festival 2022 was held at Young Paite Association (YPA) hall on Friday with great gusto and traditional gaiety with YPA chief advisor Chinngaihpau inaugurating the festival, which aims to support farmers who are engaged in the cultivation of cucumber, keep alive the traditional practices in the cultivation of cucumber, and to offer thanks to the Almighty and prayer for His abundant blessing in days to come.

Altogether 12,500 cucumbers were collected from farmers in addition to about 15,000 collected from other sources.

The inaugural programme was also attended Singngat MLA Chinlunthang and Saikot MLA Paolienlal Haokip.

In his address, MLA Paolienlal said that God has given the people of the district very fertile land which can be put to good use for agricultural transformation to create jobs, raise incomes and others.

He further said that so many educated people remain unemployed and one needs to ponder over the reason why unemployment remains an issue when parents invest huge amount of money on education of their children.

The MLA then encouraged the people to dream big and take steps when they can capitalise on land resources for prosperity.

He continued, "We sent our kids to other states for studies by spending huge amount of money but failed miserably in imparting knowledge to our children to see way for exploring the riches of their lands, adding, "We live in area where there is no need of air conditioner and fertilisers but why do we live in poverty" as he called for exploration of lands to boost local economies.

MLA Chinlunthang expressed hope that Tangmai festival will one day attain the status of an international level festival because cucumber has so many medicinal properties.

He lauded the organising committee for coming up with the idea of celebrating Tangmai harvest as festival.

He then wished that the festival will unify the tribes and hoped that it will one day be celebrated together by all sections of people.
