Kangpokpi, July 12 2024:
As part of the Manipur Human Rights Commission's (MHRC) efforts to address human rights concerns and ensure that adequate support and resources are provided to people affected by the ongoing strife, chairperson of the Commission Utpalendu Bikas Saha visited Kangpokpi district headquarters on Friday.
The visit was a significant step in MHRC's commitment to directly assess conditions of displaced people living in relief camps and engage with displaced individuals and local leaders to understand their challenges and needs.
During his visit, Saha met local leaders, students, lawyers, residents, CSO leaders, human rights activists and district level officers including additional DC Shokhongam Baite at the conference hall of DC Kangpokpi.
He interacted with them to gather first hand information about the living conditions of displaced people and the challenges they faced.
Later, the MHRC chairperson visited relief camps and interacted with the residents to understand their situation and also distributed eatables and sweets to children to bring some joy to their lives.
While interacting with media persons, the chairperson said that he came to Kangpokpi to see if human rights of the people in the district have been violated and also to observe personally the living conditions of displaced people staying in relief camps.
He continued that he came to talk with the people, social workers, civil society organisations and others on how to overcome the current situation in Manipur and achieve peace.
Nobody will benefit without peace and Manipur will not be able to survive if people continue to fight each other in the name of community, he added.
Expressing his willingness to facilitate return of the displaced people to their respective villages, UB Saha said that displaced people cannot be sent back to their native homes unless the ongoing problem is resolved.
The MHRC chairperson then appealed to intellectuals from all communities including the two warring groups to assist the displaced people in returning to their homes.
