Imphal, March 11 2025:
Demanding extension of services, contractual staff of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Langol staged protest at the administrative block of the institute, on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the protest, NIT library assistant Moirangthem Rakesh explained that there are 62 contractual staff members at the institute, many of whom have been serving for 8 to 15 years, including himself working for 11 years.
Rakesh informed that their services are extended every six months and on two occasions, extensions were granted for a year.
However, he expressed disappointment that this time, attempts have been made to outsource their jobs instead of granting an extension.
He said such a move is detrimental to the staff who have dedicated years of service to the institute.
The contractual staff members' services should be extended as usual, he demanded.
The protestors held placards with messages such as "Contractual Employees are not Tissue Papers", "Protect Service of Contract Employees", "Conduct High-Level Enquiry into Non-Teaching Recruitment Irregularities" and "Appoint Director Who Understands the Current Situation in Manipur" .
Meanwhile, some representatives of the contractual staff met with the director during which the latter firmly rejected extension of their services and announced that screening test would be conducted on March 20 and 22 .
