Chandel, August 10 2026: Assam Rifles observed World Tribal Day with indigenous communities at Larong Khunou, Larong Khullen and Vomku in Chandel district and Kwatha in Tengnoupal district on August 9 .

IGAR (South) in a release said that the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, observed annually on August 9, seeks to promote and protect the rights of indigenous peoples while recognising their cultural heritage, traditional knowledge and distinct identities.

The celebrations witnessed participation from village elders, tribal leaders, women, youths, students and local residents from the participating villages.

At Kwatha in Tengnoupal district, 73 civilians, including 38 men and 35 women, took part in the programme.

Participants wore traditional Anal Naga and Lamkang Naga attire, showcasing the rich cultural heritage, customs and identity of the indigenous communities.

The programme provided a platform for participants to celebrate and promote ancestral traditions and traditional knowledge passed down through generations.

During interactive sessions, Assam Rifles personnel highlighted the importance of preserving indigenous languages, customs and traditions and encouraged youths to remain connected to their cultural roots.

Discussions centred on promoting unity, mutual respect, harmony and responsible citizenship among communities in the region.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks and strengthened the bonds of trust and goodwill between Assam Rifles and the local communities, while promoting cultural preservation and national integration.
