Little Clinic surgeons remove biggest ever gallstone

A team of doctors at Little Clinic, Nagaram, removed a gallbladder stone (gallstone) measuring 9 cm in size from a 35-year old female patient through keyhole (laparoscopic cholecystectomy) surgery, making it the biggest gallstone recorded in medical history.
According to a report from Little Clinic, the patient from Imphal East district was admitted to the Clinic on Wednesday.
After undergoing all necessary tests and procedures, a team led by Dr Sapam Opendro performed key-hole surgery on the patient in the afternoon and successfully removed the gallstone from her gallbladder.
The patient was kept under observation for a day and discharged on Thursday.
In this regard, Dr Opendro said that the biggest gallstone recorded in medical literature was around 7 cm in size.
However, the stone removed at the hospital on Wednesday is around 9 cm, the largest till date.
Prior to the surgery, the patient got an ultrasound where the report estimated the size of the gall stone to be around 8 cm.
After surgery, however, the gall stone was measured at 9 cm in size, he said.
