Imphal, October 09 2025:
Authorities have demolished the historic Red Land building in Shillong, Meghalaya, where the Merger Agreement was signed on September 21, 1949 .
The demolition proceeded despite calls to preserve the site due to its historical significance.
Currently, a Manipur Bhavan is under construction at the same location.
Former Minister of State for External Affairs and Education Dr RK Ranjan had urged the Governor to protect the building, emphasizing its historical value.

Several groups also advocated for the Red Land building, over 90 years old, to be recognized as a Heritage Bungalow under the Archaeological Survey of India.
Notably, Maharaj Kumari Binodini resided in the building during her studies in Shillong in the 1930s .
