ATSUM-T demands transfer of 'unclean' MACS officer

Imphal, February 08 2014 : The ATSUM led by its president Muan Tombing has demanded immediate transfer of the present Deputy Director (M&C) of MACS, Dr N Shyamjai, dubbing him an unclean officer.

All Tribal Students' Union, Manipur in a statement on Friday urged Manipur's Health & Family Welfare, and GAD & CADA minister for intervention in the matter relating to immediate transfer Dr Shyamjai on various grounds.

Dr Shyamjai has been stripped of his responsibility to work as Deputy Director (TI) and assigned the responsibility of Deputy Director (M&E), but he is trying to come back as Deputy Director (Technical including TI), a step that will have a negative impact in the implementation of HIV/AIDS control programmes in the state, it said.

It alleged that NGOs will get threats from underground organisations with an attempt to pressurise, subjugate, and harass them if Shyamajai has to look after the TI in Manipur AIDS Control Society (MACS) .

NGOs are getting a lot of threats from various miscreants demanding money at the behest of Shayamjai, the statement alleged, adding that programmes of these NGOs will be hindered if the Deputy Director controls the M&E, and the pandemic of HIV/AIDS "will engulf us" and MACS will once again go through another difficult time.

It also alleged that the money meant for the PLHIV (People Living with HIV) will be wasted since it has to go into the pockets of Dr Shyamjai and his associates. Dr Shyamjai is a man without any moral values who he has no respect for the women staff of NGOs and he is always biased that he deals with everything on ethnic lines, ATSUM further accused.

It added now the National AIDS Control Support Programme (NACSP) is functioning smoothly entering its very crucial phase- IV which will decide the future of AIDS control in the state.

With the active participation of NGOs and support from MACS, the spread of HIV, particularly amongst the injecting drug users (IDUs) are reducing significantly during the last few years, it added.
