12K patients in need of palliative care in state

Association of Health Care Providers (India), Manipur Chapter Palliative Care Society Imphal in association with Indian Medical Association (IMA) Manipur State Branch organised a 16-hour awareness cum training programme on palliative care at the Heritage Hall of IMA on Sunday.
The workshop was attended by Shija Hospitals and Research Institute managing director Dr Kh Palin, Obstetrics and Gynaecologist Dr S Subodha and general surgeon Jugindro Sorokhaibam as members on the dais.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Palin informed that around 12,000 patients in the state are need of palliative support, which is specialised medical care for patients with serious or terminal diseases such as cancer.
As such type of patient service entail involvement of large number of doctors and volunteers, the workshop is being conducted for representatives of 24 private hospitals of the state, who would then spread awareness on the same in their respective hospitals, said Dr Palin.
He continued that palliative care helps in providing comfort to patients and their families.
India is now ushering a standardised system to raise human value through palliative care and Manipur is also ushering a model of the same, following the recognition from the WHO, he added.
