33K hectares of organic farming in state

Over 33,000 hectares of farmland in the state are covered under the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCDNER).
The Government of India promotes organic farming across the country through various initiatives, including the Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) and MOVCDNER .
While PKVY is implemented in all states and union territories except the Northeast, MOVCDNER is specifically designed for the North Eastern states to support organic farmers from production to marketing.
Under MOVCDNER, financial assistance of Rs 46,500 per hectare for three years is provided, which includes Rs 32,500 per hectare for organic inputs, with Rs 15,000 given directly to farmers through Direct Benefit Transfer.
Under PKVY, assistance of Rs 31,500 per hectare for a period of three years is provided for promotion of organic farming of which Rs 15,000 per hectare is paid through DBT for adopting organic farming on-farm/off-farm organic inputs.
Manipur has recorded 32,584.50 hectares under National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) and 600 hectares under Participatory Guarantee System (PGS).
Other Northeast states covered under organic farming include Assam with 27,079.40 hectares under NPOP and 4,400 hectares under PGS, Arunachal Pradesh 16,537.53 hectares under NPOP and 380 hectares under PGS, Meghalaya 29,703.30 hectares under NPOP and 900 hectares under PGS, Mizoram 14,238.30 hectares under NPOP and 780 hectares under PGS, Nagaland 16,221.56 hectares under NPOP and 480 hectares under PGS, Sikkim 75,729.78 hectares under NPOP and 63,000 hectares under PGS, and Tripura with 20,481.36 hectares under NPOP and 1,000 hectares under PGS.
Among the north eastern states, Sikkim leads in organic farming with a total of 1,38,729.78 hectares.
Manipur follows with 32,584.50 hectares, while Assam has 31,479.40 hectares covered under organic farming.
Meghalaya has 30,603.30 hectares, Tripura 21,481.36 hectares, Arunachal Pradesh 16,917.53 hectares, Nagaland 16,701.56 hectares, and Mizoram has 15,018.30 hectares covered under organic farming.
Overall, Sikkim remains the most prominent organic farming state in the Northeast, followed by Manipur, Meghalaya, and Assam, while other states have relatively smaller coverage under organic farming.
The total area covered under organic farming in India through both NPOP and PGS-lndia certification has reached 59.74 lakh hectares.
The government has also introduced measures such as training, certification, and marketing support to ensure better price realisation for organic farmers.
Under PKVY, Rs 4,500 per hectare for three years is provided for value addition, marketing, and publicity, while Rs 10,000 per hectare for three years is allocated for training, capacity building, and certification under MOVCDNER.
To strengthen market access, the government has launched the web portal www.Jaivikkheti.in, an online platform for farmers to sell their organic produce directly to consumers.
A total of 6.22 lakh farmers have been registered on the platform.
