World Breastfeeding Week 2026 launched in Thoubal

The week-long observance of World Breastfeeding Week 2026 was launched in Thoubal district on Wednesday with Deputy Commissioner Robita Yumnam calling for greater awareness on the importance of breastfeeding for the health and well-being of both mothers and children.
Organised by the District Health Society, Thoubal, the inaugural programme was held at the National Health Mission Conference Hall, CMO Complex, under the theme "Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works".
Deputy Commissioner and Chairperson of the District Health Society, Thoubal, Robita Yumnam attended the programme as the chief guest, while Chief Medical Officer Dr Krishnachandra Luwang presided over the function.
District Hospital Thoubal Medical Superintendent Dr Kh Robindro Singh, Assistant Commissioner to the Deputy Commissioner T Sangeeta Devi and the District Programme Officer of ICDS Cell, Thoubal attended as guests of honour.
Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner said scientific research has clearly established the numerous health benefits of breastfeeding for both infants and mothers.
She urged health workers, particularly ASHA and Anganwadi workers, to actively disseminate awareness on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding among mothers across the district to ensure healthier children and stronger communities.
The observance aims to promote awareness on breastfeeding practices and encourage collective efforts to improve maternal and child health through sustained community participation.
