Heritage and identity in focus as two organisations mark Foundation Day in Imphal

Imphal, September 29 2026: The 8th Foundation Day of Huiyen Lallong Thang-Ta Sindamkon, the Thang-Ta wing of Kanglei Sports Academy (Kangleisa), was observed on Sunday at Leishang Hidden Heritage Park,Kyamgei.

The celebration was graced by Sindamkon president Prof L Joykumar, Lainingthou Sanamahi Temple Board member secretary S Gandharaj, cultural activist S Shanta Meitei and Kyamgei Young Pioneer Club president N Kishan as presidium members.

Speaking on the occasion, Kangleisa technical director Kh Sanjit flagged the problem of parallel sports associations in Manipur, saying the practice of having two bodies for one discipline causes immense hardship to players.

He called for a united effort to end the dual-association culture.

He said Thang-Ta players have been bringing laurels to the State at national and international levels despite severe financial constraints.

He urged the State Government to introduce a dedicated financial assistance scheme for players travelling outside for competitions.

He further noted that while Kangleisa has produced many medal-winning players in Judo, Karate and Thang-Ta, Judo is struggling due to lack of infrastructure and equipment.

As part of the programme, Young Talent Awardee of Manipur State Kala Academy, L Priyadarshini was felicitated.

Students of the Sindamshang presented various Thang-Ta performances.

In another programme, the Indigenous Development Mission observed its 6th Foundation Day at Manipur Press Club on Sunday.

IDM thoubei ahal Yensembam Lokendro, thoubei yaima Maibam Doren and president Laishram Joy attended as presidium members.

General secretary Hamom James said IDM was founded with the objective of safeguarding indigenous religion, culture and identity.

Since its establishment in September 2021, the organisation has worked to unite Meiteis living in scattered settlements, taken up initiatives for the expansion of Kwatha village, and extended support to Meiteis in Churachandpur who lacked proper shelter and sustainable livelihoods, he said.

He added that since the outbreak of violence on May 3, 2023, IDM has stood with the displaced and conflict-affected people and extended assistance in vulnerable areas.
