Governor presses alarm button on climate change

Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla has stressed the need to protect and preserve the scenic and rare spots, rich biodiversity, natural resources and cultural heritage of Manipur, which is known as the Jewel of India.
He stated this while speaking as chief guest at the inaugural function of a three-day Nationa l Conference on 'Implications of Climate Change & Conservation of Natural Resources and Cultural Heritage 2025', jointly organised by Department of Life Sciences (Botany), Manipur University and International Council for Bio-deterioration of Cultural Property, Lucknow at the auditorium of Manipur University on Wednesday.

Governor Ajay continued that the impact of climate change is one of the most pressing global challenges of our time, not only to the natural ecosystem but also to the rich cultural heritage.
These changing impacts have greatly affected the rich flora anti fauna of Manipur and it is our shared responsibility to take care of these resources for our future generations, he stressed.
The Governor also stated that the central and state governments are working together and taking proactive steps to mitigate effects of climate change.
He further stated that the fight against climate change, conservation of natural resources and cultural heritage are inherently intertwined.
Recognising these connections, the government has made significant strides through its policies and initiatives in mitigating climate change.
He also highlighted many initiatives taken up by the central government under the guidance of PM Narendra Modi, such as 'One World, One Sun, One Grid', and the Swachh Bharat Mission.
He then appealed to the students to acknowledge the impact of climate change and to act as the ambassadors to carry the message of conserving natural resources so as to develop a sustainable future.
Presiding over the function, MU VC Prof N Lokendra said that climate change is a global phenomenon and it is the responsibility of each one of us to help slow the impacts of this phenomenon.
Later, Governor Ajay inspected the various facilities at the Department of Botany and interacted with the students.
PCCF Anurag Bajpai, MU School of Life Sciences dean Prof Debananda S Ningthoujam, National Conference organising secretary Prof Ksh Lal Bihari Singha, and Department of Life Sciences (Botany) head and National Conference convenor Prof Kanabala Sarangthem attended the inaugural session as presidium members.
A souvenir was also released on the occasion.
