MTU pioneers DRR education with new student club

Imphal, August 01 2026: Manipur Technical University (MTU) has launched the MTU Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Club under its Disaster Management Cell.

The Club was inaugurated on Monday by Vice-Chancellor Prof W Chandbabu Singh during the induction programme of the first batch of M.Tech students across four engineering disciplines.

MTU has been a pioneer in integrating DRR education into technical education.

It became the first institution in India to implement a 3-credit DRR syllabus for undergraduates in 2022 and has now introduced a 2-credit Skill Development Course on DRR for M.Tech students from the 2026 academic session.

Kosygin Leishangthem, Coordinator of the Disaster Management Cell and IUINDRR Nodal Officer, MTU, served as an expert member of the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) curriculum development committee for both UG and PG DRR syllabi.

Through this, MTU has contributed to strengthening DRR education at the national level.

The University has also upgraded DRR education from an Interdisciplinary Open Course to a mandatory course for all students, in line with UGC and AICTE directions.

The newly formed DRR Club, a student-led initiative, will translate classroom learning into practical action through awareness programmes, first-aid and emergency response training, mock drills and community outreach.

An annual DRR training and mock-drill programme has also been incorporated into the MTU Academic Calendar.

Addressing students, Prof Chandbabu said engineers are architects of tomorrow's infrastructure and have a vital responsibility in building safer and more resilient communities.
