Many mourn demise of Dr Gojen Meetei

Padma Shri awardee and MEELAL president Dr Waikhom Gojen Meetei, who passed away on May 23, 2026, was remembered with deep sorrow by several organisations across Manipur today.
Members of the All Manipur Dalit Development Association (AMDDA) and the Tombisana High School Committee jointly visited his Sekta residence.
Led by AMDDA president Dr TM Rajen Ayangba, they recalled Gojen's tenure as AMDDA treasurer, his selfless service to the Dalit community, and his efforts to strengthen hillvalley unity and promote education & literature.
Laiyingthou Sanamahi Thougal Kanglup (LSTK) described him as a "true leader" who contributed as a film director, producer, lyricist, and national worker.
LSTK noted he faced imprisonment while campaigning to revive the indigenous script and was instrumental in advancing Manipuri cinema and culture.
The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) said his untimely demise is an "irreparable loss", highlighting his lifelong work to safeguard Manipuri language, script, and identity, and to project them globally.
The Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) recalled Gojen as founder president of Wakhallon Mannaba Apunba (WAMA) and a guiding force in cultural and public movements.
DESAM said his death has left a deep void in the State's intellectual and social spheres.
All organisations observed silence, offered floral tributes, and extended condolences to the bereaved family, praying for peace to the departed soul.
