Imphal, November 24 2024:
The Pambei-led United National Liberation Front (UNLF) marked its 60th Raising Day with a commemorative event held at the Front's 2nd Brigade General Headquarters at Kakching Khunou in Kakching district on Sunday, with a call for rebuilding leadership, unity and upholding idea of Manipur.
The event was attended by re tired Manipur University (MU) professor and former head of the history department Naorem Joykumar as chief guest and Pambei-led UNLF acting-chairman Moirangthem Nongyai as president.
Manipur Human Rights Commission chairman and Taragi Cheisu chairman Khaidem Mani, MU economics department professor Ch Priyoranjan, former MU anthropology professor W Nabakumar, retired IAS officer and columnist RK Nimai, MCM president Haji Arafat Ali, and Jakir Singgamayum were also present at the event as guests of honour.
The event commenced with the hoisting of the UNLF flag by Moirangthem Nongyai, followed by floral tributes and salutes to the departed leaders and martyrs.
A two-minute silence was observed in their memory.
In his address, Nongyai emphasised the rich history and heritage of Manipur, describing it as a nation that commands pride but is currently at a crossroads.
He pointed out a lack of potential leadership in both revolutionary organisations and society at large, stating that while people recognise the issue, they have been unable to resolve it.
He clarified that peace talks with the Government of India should not be equated with surrender and stressed the importance of adopting coordinated approach to address the ongoing conflict with Kuki-Zo groups, which he described as a battle, not a war.
Nongyai urged the Meetei community to rebuild a collective sense of nationalism, while cautioning against compromising the idea of Manipur in the endeavour to safeguard the community.
Retired professor Naorem Joykumar highlighted the distinction between academic excellence and intellectualism, stating that true intellectuals are those with a deep sense of philosophy and commitment to societal and national progress.
He criticised the prevalence of numerous organisations and self-proclaimed intellectuals in the present day Manipuri society, and called for a unified voice to guide the people forward.
Joykumar also raised concern over whether the Government of India is using the Meeteis as scapegoats in its broader geopolitical games, while urging individuals to continue their mite in safeguarding Manipur and its people.
He praised the UNLF for its pivotal role in movements to rebuild the idea of Manipur and expressed hope that the organisation would take a leading role in fostering unity within society.
