CAU develops aquatic vegetables

Imphal, September 24 2026: Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal has developed two varieties of aquatic vegetables namely; CAU Kolamni-I (water spinach) and CAU Ekaithabi-I (water mimosa) as State varieties of Manipur.

The two varieties were developed by a multidisciplinary team from College of Agriculture, CAU Imphal led by Prof Indira Sarangthem, comprising Dr N Brajendra Singh, Dr Shravan Manbhar Haldhar, Dr H Nanita Devi, Dr Lokesh Kumar Mishra, Dr Ps Mariam Anal, Dr Pukhram Bhumita, Dr Nivedita Oinam and Dr L Punikkumar Singh with the aim of providing improved planting material suited to the agro-ecological conditions of the State.

The varieties were presented before the State variety Release Committee by the respective breeders/scientists of CAU Imphal.

Following evaluation and consideration of their performance, the varieties were recommended for release for the State of Manipur.

CAU Kolamni-I has a harvesting period of approximately 30-50 days after planting and recorded a yield potential of 88.45-94.67 q/ha under normal conditions.

CAU Ekaithabi-I can be harvested approximately 45-50 days after planting and recorded a yield potential of 76.28-80.56 q/ha under normal conditions.
