Imphal, May 23 2025:
The Thadou Students' Association, Sadar Hills has opposed the Manipur Transport Department's decision to implement electronic Driving Licence (e-DL) and electronic Registration Certificate (e-RC) replacing physical smart cards and appealed for the directive to be kept in abeyance.
A press release issued yesterday by Seiminthang Kipgen, vice president, Thadou Students' Association, Sadar Hills asserted that the hill people will be at the receiving end of this directive owing to the absence of electricity and internet in large swathes of hill areas.
While acknowledging the benefits of digitization, the Association criticized the hastiness of the "attempted implementation" which failed to take the ground realities of the State into account where people are more focused on survival.
It pointed out the thousands of IDPs in the State, its poor economy and the long-drawn out internet ban in Manipur.
It questioned if the Department can predict peaceful, idyllic days are returning to the State.
Stating that the digitization move has come under fire from different quarters, the Thadou Students' Association, Sadar Hills has appealed for the directive to be kept in abeyance.
