Imphal, June 22 2024:
Although floodwater has receded, residents of Nagaram under Heingang AC are still unable to return and live in their homes.
The wastes brought by the floodwater remain piled up on the side of the roads, making it inconvenient not only for the people in the area but also for those passing through.
Speaking in this regard on Saturday, Nagaram Youth Club president Johansen Awungshi appealed to the authority concerned to remove the rotting waste piled on the road side at the earliest, while further urging the state government and the relevant department to help the people of Nagaram wherever needed.
He informed that the residents of Nagaram are facing more post flood issues and unable to return and live in their homes.
While the floodwater has receded, majority of the houses are still muddied.
Most of the household items have been left damaged and the debris brought by the Naga Nala is blocking the water in some parts from receding.
The wastes picked up from Naga Nala and dumped on the side of Dinku road for a long time are now emanating a rancid smell and affecting everyone in the area.
Awungshi continued that around 500 houses in Nagaram area were inundated after the Imphal River breached its banks in Khurai Larikyengbam Leikai due to heavy rain experienced in May-end.
While the floodwater has gone down, there are concerns of possible outbreak of diseases.
As such, he urged the state government to take precautionary measures ahead of time and quell the panic amongst the people.
One Tamsingphy Woleng, who resides in Nagaram, said that as most of the houses are full of mud, the residents are unable to live in their own homes.
While some of the rich families have hired workers to clean their respective houses, the low-income families have no choice.
Also, while some have engaged water tankers to clean their homes, there is still shortage of drinking and cleaning water.
The number of mosquitos during night time has also increased.
As such, she urged the Health, Public Health and Malaria Department to pay close attention to the matter and alleviate the suffering of the people.
