Imphal, December 19 2008:
CISF (SSG) COMMANDANT, SK Mallick arrived at Imphal today for carrying out a survey on the security of the Manipur Chief Minister, O Ibobi Singh which the state police wanted protection by the National Security Guard.
The commandant of the Central Industrial Security Forces (CISF) based at Noida, SK Mallick will stay till December 21 and study the security problems of the chief minister in the aftermath of repeated attacks the chief minister's bungalow in the recent times.
Manipur police recently in the month of November put up a proposal to the Centre for handing over the security protection of the Manipur chief minister to the National Security Guard.
The state police chief, Y Joykumar proposed the same through the Union ministry of home affairs during a high-level security review meeting chaired by national security advisor M K Narayanan on the north-east along with the police chiefs of region at New Delhi.
Chief Minister O Ibobi faced at least attacks from militants at least two times during this year by exploding bombs inside his official bungalow.
Since then, the security of the chief minister has been a question.
While the state security force has been on high alert in and around the chief minister's bungalow after a lathod bomb fired by militants exploded inside the bungalow, another hand grenade was exploded nearby at the main road passing through the western side of the same bungalow on October 19 night.
Both the blast had been claimed by the People Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak, PREPAK, a armed rebel group fighting for sovereignty of the state.
They have been warning chief minister O Ibobi Singh to rectify his alleged misdeed in the pass.
Since then, the security of the chief minister as well as in and around his bungalow has been tightening up.
CCTV cameras have been installed at the CM bungalow apart from traffic regulations on the main roads running adjacent to the bungalow.
While moving out for tour also high security measures taken.
The proposal for deployment of the NSG for protection of the chief minister was taken in a high level security review meeting convened by the Manipur chief secretary on November 3 last.
Even though MHA turned down the proposal, state home department once again insisted the officials of the MHA to re-consider in the first week of this current month.
