Rally, sit-in condemn murder of Abdul Kadir
Source: Chronicle News Service

Imphal, June 19 2025: A mass rally was carried out in Lilong area on Thursday demanding swift arrest of Khaba, allegedly involved in the killing of Chesam Abdul Kadir, who went missing on June 10 only for his body to found buried at Samurou section of the Nambul river bank on June 17 .

The rally organised by Anju-man Islah-e-Mushrah, Lilong and United Meitei-Pangal Committee (UMPC), Manipur commenced from Lilong Dam and marched up to Usoipokpi before ending at the starting point.

During the rally, the participants held placards and chanted slogans such as 'We condemn terrorist act of Arambai Tenggol', 'Hand over Kadir case to CBI or NIA', 'AT should be declared terrorist organisation' and 'Arrest AT leader Khaba at the earliest' .

Speaking to media persons, Anjuman general secretary Habibulah condemned the brutal murder Chesam Kadir, a differently-abled person.

He further demanded immediate arrest and stringiest punishment of Khaba, and declaration of AT Unit 27 as unlawful.

In denunciation of the murder of Abdul Kadir, sit-in protest was staged at Paobitek Mayai Leikai community hall, Imphal West district on Thursday.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the protest organised by the Joint Action Committee Against the Killing of Chesam Abdul Kadir, one Thongkhongmayum Bidya demanded that absconding murder accused be arrested within 24 hours and police should file chargesheet of the case within a week to expedite exemplary punishment of culprits.

Meanwhile, All Manipur Muslim Students' Organisation (AMMSO) strongly condemned the abduction, enforced disappearance, and subsequent brutal murder of Chesam Abdul Kadir.

In a release, AMMSO president Imtiyas said the inhuman act allegedly carried out by members of Arambai Tenggol Unit 27 Quick Response Team along with involvement of a Meira Paibi leader, is not just a heinous crime but an act of terrorism and grave crime against humanity.

Targeting member of one of the vulnerable and marginalised sections of the society reveals the depths of lawlessness and moral decay currently consuming the state.

Those claiming to fight for the 'protection' or 'reformation' of Manipur have instead become destroyers of its centuries-old social fabric, he asserted.

Questioning where the state is and Government of Manipur, Imtiyas said that for the last two years, the effective governance of the state appears to have collapsed, replaced by the unchecked dominance of armed militants who now act with impunity, as though they are the legitimate guardians of the people.

"Labelling Abdul Kadir as a 'suspected thief' is not only baseless but also reflects a dangerous stereotyping of Pangals with theft.

This stigmatisation is nothing short of communal profiling and character assassination.

The real looters are those who rob lives, peace, and resources; who divert development funds meant for marginalised communities like the Pangals, depriving them of proper access to education, healthcare, and political participation, " he remarked, while adding that it is not an isolated incident as similar incidents had also been reported in recent times.

The AMMSO president recalled that Sagolsumpham Sahir, a driver from Kshetrigao, was beaten to death in Takhel, and Tampakmayum Aktar, a boy from Kwakta, forced to eat pork and had a nail driven into his leg, among other ghastly incidents.

Calling out the so-called mainstream civil society organisations (CSOs) that claim to stand for unity, peace, and justice in Manipur, he asked why have they gone silent in the face of such brutality and condemned that their hypocrisy has reached its peak.

"Nevertheless, we deeply appreciate the CSOs, student unions, organisations, and associations that have shown solidarity and stood up to demand justice for Abdul Kadir," he lauded.

Questioning the government why Arambai Tenggol leader Longjam Khaba, the prime accused, has not been arrested, he enquired the intelligence apparatus of the government and wondered whether his non-arrest a deliberate act and justice in Manipur is selective.

The government should deliver justice or be prepared for a mass uprising, he cautioned, while adding that people of Manipur-across all communities are yearning for peace, justice, and coexistence.

Every community must refrain from posting irresponsible content on social media that threatens the coexistence of Manipur society.

Circulating old videos and photos on Face-book and WhatsApp to go viral and create confusion or tension among communities must stop.

The police must also take appropriate action in this matter, he demanded.

"We must stand united for our shared values, peaceful coexistence, and against fringe elements.

We stand united against communal forces.

We demand justice for Chesam Abdul Kadir.

We demand an end to violence, impunity, and discrimination against the marginalised," he added.

In separate releases, Uripok Apunba Lup and Khuman United Clubs & Meira Paibies Association, Mayang Imphal strongly condemned the killing of Chesam Abdul Kadir alias Chesam Achouba son of Chesam Abdul Jalin.

They demanded the government to track down and punish all the perpetrators stringently.

They urged the Meetei community to unite with the Meitei Pangal community in their movement, following the right path to achieve justice.
