Many observe International Museum Day

Department of Science and Technology observed the international Muse um Day and the 19th foundation day of Manipur Science Centre under the theme of 'Museums for education and research' at the auditorium of Manipur Science Centre, Takyelpat, here, on Saturday.
Speaking as chief guest of the event, Science and Technology joint secretary Chingakham Sachi Devi highlighted the role played by museums in teaching the emerging generations about how humankind and civilisations came into being and developed over the ages.
She then said that the increasing number of museums in the state including privately-owned are of great benefit to all.
She continued that with technological advancements, digital formatting and documentation of the artefacts, contributions of scientists and every other related aspect would greatly benefit the future generations.
She then stressed on the importance of modernisation of museums for which funds could be procured from the Ministry concerned.
Presided over by Science and Technology director Homila Hongrei, the observance was attended by Moirang College principal Dr Raheijuddin Sheikh and Manipur Science Center curator TK Kom as guests of honour.
As part of the 19th Foundation Day of Manipur Science Centre, an on-the-spot painting competition for students was also conducted and the winners feted.
Meanwhile, Manipur University Central Museum, MU celebrated the International Museum Day under the theme of "Museums for education and Research", at its conference hall on Saturday.
The function was attended by MU VC Prof N Lokendra Singh as chief guest, School of Human and Environmental Science dean Prof S Jibonkumar Singh as guest of honour and School of Social Sciences dean Prof Th Purnima Devi as president.
During the function, the dignitaries released Museum Bulletin Vol XIII, jointly edited by Manipur University Central Museum curator i/c Dr Meesala Ramkrishna and research associate Dr Ng Jayshree Devi.
In his speech, VC Prof N Lokendra Singh highlighted the importance of a museum at university level.
He also pointed out the importance of publications of research works and the necessity to upgrade the Museum Bulletin so that it could be included as one of UGC recognised journals.
Prof S Jibonkumar Singh stressed on the role museum could play in the context of NEP; while Prof Th Purnima Devi highlighted how Museum could easily narrate the history of mankind and development of civilisations through its exhibitions.
The event was attended by distinguished invitees, students, research scholars, faculties and non-teaching staffs of MU.
