Imphal, December 17 2024:
On behalf of 19 civil society organisations (CSOs) of Manipur, Manipur International Youth Centre (MIYC) submitted a memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, seeking an appointment to discuss peace initiatives to address the ongoing crisis in the state.
Highlighting violence gripping the state since May 3, 2023 and suffering of the people, the CSOs sought the Prime Minister's intervention to bring lasting peace and resolve the crisis.
According to the memorandum, the organisations are set to hold a peaceful rally and demonstration in Delhi on December 22, under the theme "Peace and Mutual Coexistence", aimed at drawing attention to the Manipur issue and promote dialogue between the warring communities.
The CSOs emphasised that the collective effort seeks to advocate for peace, harmony, and mutual respect among all sections of society.
The CSOs have requested an appointment with the Prime Minister between December 22 and 25, to air their concerns and explore possible avenues for peace.
They urged the Prime Minister to visit Manipur, expressing that his presence would provide a unique opportunity for direct engagement with the communities and encourage them to halt hostilities.
They believe this step would create a conducive environment for lasting peace and send a strong message of national unity and commitment to resolving the crisis.
The memorandum also called for intervention in the resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs), ensuring their safe return to their homes, restoring their livelihoods, and upholding their dignity.
