The Society for People's Advancement Manipur (SPAM) has successfully taken up cultivation of maize in collaboration with the state agriculture department at Sanakeithel in Ukhrul district and hoped of producing the crop at higher rate than previous seasons.
Officials of the department led by its additional director L Phalwndro and deputy director (planning) G Samu Kabui with the functionaries of the SPAM today inspected the maize cultivation at Sanakeithel today which was taken up under the accelerated maize development programme, a scheme of the state agriculture department.
The crop development officer in-charge L Ibomcha under whose guidance the maize cultivation was taken also among the officials visiting the site.
In the field Aparanji variety of maize is being cultivating there in 30 acres of land.
The department had provided 750 kgs of maize seed for cultivation.
After inspecting the field, officials of the department calculated a production target of 60 tones of maize this year.
Ibomcha, the cultivation of this variety of maize has been practicing since 2008-09 season and the department is targeting to cultivate maize to an area of 21,000 hectares across the country with a production target of 42,000 metric tones.
