Imphal, May 15 2024:
Around 603 lecturers recruited on contract basis under the state Education Department in 2018 and their service regularised in 2022, carried out protest on Tuesday, denouncing the non-payment of salaries for over year.
According to the protesters, around 603 of them were recruited as higher secondary lecturers under the Education Department in 2018 on contract basis.
The lecturers were regularised in 2022 and later posted to various higher secondary schools of the state.
They were also utilised for the 12th General Election and the recent Lok Sabha election, in addition to their utilisation in preparing questions for the Class X & XII examinations, invigilator and examiner duty.
When the teachers requested the authority concerned to clear the pending salaries for the contract period and after regularisation, they were assured payment after conclusion of the Class X and XII examinations.
However, no process to clear the salaries is initiated even after the examination results have been declared.
As such, the enraged teachers after completing their classes and duties and end of school hours, launched protest at the Directorate's office from Tuesday.
The protest will continue until the government clears the pending salaries, they affirmed.
The teachers continued that after the conflict broke out on May 3 last year, many teachers, despite staying in relief camps, have been teaching the students.
Many teachers with toddlers are forced to bring their kids while on duty after running out of options, while others are facing difficulties due to price hike, and some due to the recent hail and thunderstorm.
Teachers also need to have peace of mind while teaching students but non-payment of salaries for over a year amidst the effects of the conflict, has raised questions on how the teacher can continue to perform their duty.
Thus, the teachers appealed to the government to clear the pending salaries at the earliest.
