Noney joins global fight against tobacco

District Health Society, Noney observed World No Tobacco Day as part of the National Tobacco Control Programme on Friday at Tentmaker Academy, Longmai Part-3, Noney town.
The programme held under the theme 'Protecting children from Tobacco Industry Interference' was attended by noney chief medical officer Dr Z Kamei as chief guest in the presence of NTCP Noney district nodal officer Dr Shangamlung Kamei, and Tentmaker Academy administrator Rev Sangailung Gangmei.
Speaking on the occasion, CMO Dr Z Kamei cautioned that tobacco is a deadly addiction that affects many people, and urged tobacco users to quit and inspire others to do so.
The programme was coordinated by district programme manager in-charge Kalingjuanliu Gonmei and district finance manager in-charge George Kamei.
Meanwhile, an awareness programme on 'Adverse Health effects of Tobacco and Tobacco Related Products' for students was held at Rhema Public School, Khumji, Noney district.
The programme was organised by the District Health Society, Noney under National Tobacco Control Program.
During his speech, DNO Dr Shangamlung Kamei said that Noney is committed to creating a tobacco-free future for all and emphasised the importance of community health and wellbeing.
He further said that Tobacco Central Law of India, as well as penalties for COPTA violations and setting up of Tobacco Central Cell, will be enforced in Noney district shortly.
According to experts, tobacco consumption is the leading cause of global deaths, causing over 8 million deaths annually.
India has enacted COPTA-2023 to protect the public from the harmful effects of tobacco use, particularly among youth and children.
The government launched NTCP, a multipronged approach for effective tobacco control in the community, and the PRG is supporting state and district capacity to implement anti-tobacco legislation.
