NABARD observes National Handloom Day in Bishnupur

Bishnupur, August 11 2026:
The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), Manipur Regional Office, in association with the Manipur Apex Handloom Weavers and Handicrafts Artisans Cooperative Society Ltd (AWAS), observed the 12th National Handloom Day at Ningthoukhong Kha-Khunou Community Hall today under the theme "Celebrating India's Weaving Heritage" .
The programme was attended by RCS W Ibohal Singh, Manipur Rural Bank Chairman Abhay Kumar, Weavers Service Centre Assistant Director (Design) Beauty Milli.
NABARD DGM Bendang Aier, NABARD GM OIC K Ramalingam and AWAS Chairman Y Premchandra Meitei, among others.
The observance highlighted the rich tradition of handloom weaving and the contribution of weavers to the socio-economic development of rural communities.
Handloom stalls showcasing products and craftsmanship of local weavers were also set up.
The dignitaries interacted with weavers and discussed various aspects of the handloom sector, including livelihood opportunities, challenges faced by artisans, market access and the need to promote indigenous products".
As part of the programme, outstanding artisans and women weavers were also felicitated in recognition of their contribution towards preserving and promoting Manipur's handloom heritage.
Speaking on the occasion, the dignitaries stressed the need to strengthen the handloom sector by creating better livelihood opportunities, improving market linkages, promoting indigenous products and generating greater public awareness of the socioeconomic importance of handloom weaving.
National Handloom Day is observed annually on August 7 to honour the handloom weaving community and celebrate India's rich textile heritage.
The day commemorates the launch of the Swadeshi Movement on August 7, 1905, and symbolises the promotion of indigenous goods and self-reliance.
