Imphal, August 07 2025:
North-East Indigenous People's Forum (NEIPF) has strongly condemned the United Naga Council (UNC) for threatening Indigenous People's Forum, Manipur Chapter, president Ashang Kasar over the upcoming observance of World Indigenous Day 2025 in Imphal.
In a press statement issued by chairman Anup Chetia, NEIPF described as "shocking and surprising" to learn from local print media that UNC had openly issued threats to Ashang Kasar regarding the event scheduled for August 9.Anup Chetia clarified that the celebration is being organised by NEIPF, which is headquartered in Guwahati, Assam, while the Indigenous People's Forum, Manipur (IPFM) is only acting as the host.
"The UNC's recent objections to the celebration, circulated through social media, have been addressed through a letter clarifying that the event is not a personal matter of Ashang Kasar or IPFM but a regional celebration for the entire North-East," the NEIPF chairman stated.
He added that the forum found it "unacceptable" that UNC had "dictated the Naga public not to attend" the observance without offering any valid explanation.
NEIPF urged UNC to make its position clear and to provide specific reasons for its opposition, both to the North-East Indigenous People's Forum and the host organisation IPFM .
