Award for Excellence launched, teachers honoured

Department of Education on Thursday organised the State Level Celebration of Teachers' Day at MFSDS, Palace Compound where honouring of State Teachers' Awards of Education (S) and the launching of "Chief Minister's Award for Educational Excellence, 2024" were the main highlights.
To honour Dr S Radhakrishnan, in whose memory Teachers' Day is celebrated nationwide, floral tributes were offered to his portrait.
Education Minister Th Basanta Kumar introduced the Chief Minister's Award for Educational Excellence and presented it to eight colleges.
Additionally, six teachers were recognised with state awards during the ceremony.
The teachers who received the awards included Lisham Roma Devi, primary teacher of Athokpam Junior High School; Ch Damayanti Devi, arts graduate teacher of Changangei Junior High School; Akoijam Sundari Devi, arts graduate teacher of Ningthoukhong Higher Secondary School; Hriiziio Adahe, science graduate teacher of Mao Maram Higher Secondary School; P Nipendro Singh, principal of Model Higher Secondary School; and Binodkumar Sharma, Hindi graduate teacher from Irang Pt II Government High School.
Each award carries Rs 50,000, certificate and memento.
In the "Chief Minister's Award for Educational Excellence, 2024," eight colleges were honoured with cash awards.
Manipur College, Don Bosco College Maram and Thoubal College received the first, second and third prizes, respectively, consisting of Rs 5 lakh, Rs 3 lakh and Rs 2 lakh, along with certificates.
Pemton College, SK Women's College, Waikhom Mani Girls College, Mount Everest College and TS Paul Manipur Women's College were ranked fourth to eighth, each receiving Rs 1 lakh and certificate.
The event also recognised the principals of Kakching Higher Secondary and TG Higher Secondary School with mementos and appreciation certificates for performance of the schools' students in the class XII examinations conducted by CoHSEM.
Teachers from 31 government schools which achieved 100 percent pass percentage in the class X examination conducted by BoSEM and 12 government schools which secured a 100 percent pass rate in the class XII examination conducted by CoHSEM, were awarded.
Additionally, teachers from government schools having 68 subject toppers were also presented with certificates and mementos.
Speaking on the occasion, education minister Th Basantakumar emphasised that the function was organised to honour teachers for their vital role in shaping students and to pay tribute to Dr S Radhakrishnan on his birthday.
He attributed progress and achievements in the education sector to collective efforts of department officials, teachers and students.
Conceding lapses in the education department in its pursuit of improving education in the state, he pledged to ensure such errors do not recur and also urged the media to not only focus on the shortcomings of the education sector but also to celebrate and publicise its successes and progress made.
Stating that performance of the state in the National Achievement Survey (NAS) conducted for class III, V, VIII and X exemplary, he said that state's performance in class III, V, VIII and X is higher than the national average.
Among the North Eastern states, Manipur topped outcomes of the said survey, said the minister crediting the achievement to hard work by teachers of the state.
The minister further noted that, under the School Fagathansi Mission initiated by CM Biren, 120 schools (two per assembly constituency) have been established as model schools.
The department plans to upgrade more government schools to this model status in future phases, he said.
Emphasising that every child has the right to education, minister Basantakumar stressed the importance of collective efforts to ensure that these rights are fully realised.
He urged everyone to work together to provide education to all children in every locality along with confiding that the government is considering to implement a law to mandate school attendance for children who are currently deprived of education.
Regarding the ongoing crisis in the state, the minister reported that 15,915 students have been displaced and are taking refuge in relief camps.
Nodal officers have been appointed to address the needs of these displaced students, while volunteers are assisting with their education.
Additionally, a command and control centre has been established in Babupara to monitor school data, modelled after the Gujarat approach.
He also said that the pending promotion in government colleges will be provided very soon and recruitment process for teachers will be done through MPSC.
Presided over by education commissioner H Gyan Prakash, the function was also attended by University and Higher Education director Rangitabali Waikhom and Education (S) director L Nandakumar as guests of honour.
THOUBAL: As in other parts of the country, Teachers' Day was celebrated at Manihar School (Special Education for Persons with disabilities), Thoubal Wangmataba on Thursday with Wangoo Zila Parishad ex-member A Brojen, Development for Women s Programme Centre president S Tanoubi and social worker Basudeva of Heirok Thokchom Leikai as chief guest, president and guest of honour, respectively.
The celebration was marked by presentation of gifts to teachers by the students, who also staged cultural shows.
