Imphal, July 02 2024:
Due to the government's failure for alternative arrangement during construction of the Lamsang bridge over the Nambul River, the swelling water of the river has started overflowing the temporary crossing point made with culverts to allow the river to flow, thus, causing problems to the people, apart from vehicles being swept away by the strong water current.
Due to incessant rainfall, the water level of Nambul River has risen, causing the water which previously flowed through the culvert, to overflow.
A resident of Lairenkabi Mamang Leikai, who runs a chicken centre at Lamsang bazar, was swept away by the strong water current while attempting to cross the temporary path on the southern side of the incomplete bridge around 10 pm on Monday.
Although he was rescued, his vehicle (Honda Pleasure) was carried away by the water current.
Speaking to this daily about the situation, Progressive Youth Association, Lamsang joint secretary Herojit Laishram informed that the Lamsang Bridge is crucial for the residents along the Uripok Kangchup Road including people of Kangchup, Phayeng, Kadangband, Lairenkabi, Heibongpokpi and Haorang.
The bridge is being built by Hindustan Constructions Company.
During its construction, there should have been an alternative temporary bridge for public use.
However, no such temporary arrangement has been made.
Instead, authorities concerned constructed a temporary crossing point adjacent to the bridge using culverts.
He further informed that whenever there is heavy rainfalls and the water level rises, Nambul river flows over the temporary crossing point.
There have been incidents where passersby were swept away by the strong current of the water while trying to wade through the temporary crossing point.
On Monday, another person was swept away along with his vehicle.
Although he was saved, his vehicle was carried away by the water current.
The Hindustan Constructions Company has been urged on several occasions to construct a temporary bridge instead ofthe temporary crossing point using culverts.
The temporary crossing point becomes problematic for the people of Uripok Kangchup Road whenever it rains and the Nambul River overflows.
As such, Herojit, urged authority concerned to intervene immediately and take necessary action in the interest of public.
