Imphal, June 26 2025:
All Manipur Women's Social Reformation and Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj) president Thokchom Ramani, on Thursday said that it would be futile to rely on outsiders to resolve the ongoing crisis in the state.
She made the remark while addressing the 50th foundation day celebration of Nupi Samaj held at Iroisemba community hall.
Ramani urged the people of Manipur to abandon personal ambitions for leadership and instead work collectively to safeguard the future of the state, while reminding the people to realise the gravity of the situation.
"Manipur is at a crossroads, facing an existential threat," she said, and appealed to intellectuals in the state to actively engage in charting a way forward through deep reflection and discussion.
Reflecting on the Meira Paibi movement, Ramani stated that it began as Nisha Bandh aimed at protecting society from the threat of liquor and substance abuse.
She lamented that the state has lost many lives to substance abuse, fake encounters, and enforced disappearances, adding that the situation remains largely unchanged even today.
The programme was attended by Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup president Lourembam Nganbi Leima, All Manipur Tammi Chingmi Apunba Nupi Lup president Yambem Momon Leima, Iroisemba Lourembam Leikai Nisabandh Association president Sougaijam Ibemnungshi Leima, and United Committee Manipur president YK Dhiren.
Floral tributes were offered in remembrance of the brave mothers who had fought for a better society and in honour of the deceased members of Nupi Samaj.
Nupi Samaj general secretary P Sobita also addressed the gathering and recalled the role of the Meira Paibi movement in defending and preserving the social fabric of Manipur.
