Tree plantation, competitions mark Earth Day observance

Imphal, April 22 2022: Various organisations including 44 Assam Rifles, Manipur State Legal Service Authority (MASLSA), Lions Clubs of Imphal along with Epathoukok, SK Women's College and CI College observed World Earth Day on Friday.

In connection with the observance, District Legal Services Authority Chandel organised an essay and painting competition Friday.

In all, 58 students of class VIII-IX took part in the competition held at Trinity Students' Hostel, Moreh.

The essay competition held on the theme 'Deforestation: Its impact in the environment' and 'Clean Earth: Let us protect out mother Earth' was participated by 25 student while 33 students took part in the painting competition.

A painting competition in coordination with Legal Literary Club was also held at Pallel with the participation of students and volunteers of legal literary clubs of Chandel and Tengnoupal districts.

44 Assam Rifles of 22 Sector/IGAR (East) organised a drive to revisit last year's saplings planted by the battalion as a part of Earth Day observance.

In a release, PRO (Defence) informed that last year, the battalion had planted 82,000 saplings in various parts of Tamenglong and Kangpokpi districts.

The event witnessed jawans of the unit planting fresh saplings to replace the dead ones.

One of the objectives of the drive was to spread awareness among locals and troops about importance of trees and also of the secondary advantages acquired like prevention of soil erosion and landslides.

The saplings included local varieties like Parkia (bitter bean), palm, orange, tamarind, lemon, guava and jackfruit.

The release mentioned that since 1970 International Mother Earth Day, also known as Earth Day, is observed on April 22 across the globe to spread awareness about environmental protection and acknowledge the global climate crisis which is getting worse day by day.

This year's theme of Earth Day is to Invest in our planet'.

MASLSA in collaboration with District Legal Service Authority (DLSA), Imphal East and West also organised a cycle rally under the theme "Invest in our planet' as part of the observance from Langol Housing Complex to Lamphel Court Complex.

After the rally led by MASLSA member secretary Ojesh Mutum ended, a prize distribution programme was organised at ADR Building, Lamphel Court Complex for various events conducted earlier with Rajkumari Bushila Karta bagging the first prize, Sapam Pariba second and Huirem Melody third prize for Short Video Making Competition for Social Media on the topic 'Environment Issues, Problem, Concern in Your Surrounding Locality of Manipur' .

For the Selfie Contest held under the topic 'Non-Bio-degradable Waste, A Cancer for Environment', the first prize was presented to Sonica Ningombam, second to Khullakpam Zulfiya and third to Survastaba Irengbam.

First prize for the Slogan Competition held under the topic 'Urbanisation and its Impact in Manipur' was awarded to Adhikari Rama Sharma, second to Paris Aribam and the third prize to Laishram Thoibisana Chanu.

Meanwhile, SK Women's College Nambol Department of Geology in collaboration with Internal Quality Assurance Cell observed World Earth Day at the College's conference hall, CI College Bishnupur Environment Cell at its conference hall, Lions Club of Imphal and Epathoukok at Epathoukok complex, Lamphelpat.

In a release, Lions Club of Imphal stated that as part of the observance saplings were planted at Epathoukok com pound.

In Kakching district, Kakching High School 1984 Matric Batch planted tree saplings at Cheng-Kei Pung' road, Kakching Wairi Bamon Pareng as part of World Earth Day observance.

Similarly, Centre for Women and Girls, Lhunnajang village, Pallel observed the Day by with the plantation of 50 tree sapling at four places by children from Chandel and Tengnoupal districts along with launching of a 45-day long 'Voice for Green Earth' campaign.

Speaking on the occasion, Centre for Women and Girls, Lhunnajang chief functionary Hechin Haokip informed that the campaign will continue till World Environment Day on June 5 and will be marked by rally, painting competition, poster-making, cleanliness drive, etc.

On the other hand, Angaan Ching Eco Park Kakching Management Committee under the Alliance for Development Alternatives-Manipur (ADAM), Kakching organised a tree plantation drive at the Eco Park as part of World Earth Day observance.
