Imphal, April 19 2025:
JNIMS director Dr L Usharani has stated that all wastes generated from the medical institute are being properly and safely disposed of as per the guidelines.
In an exclusive interview with The People's Chronicle, Dr L Usharani explained that the waste generated from JNIMS falls under two categories namely, general wastes and biomedical wastes.
She said that although general waste is disposed of at the dumping site in Lamdeng through an NGO, the disposal was halted during the pandemic as some sections of the public expressed health concerns and the disposal of general waste at Lamdeng resumed only after the pandemic.
On the other hand, the bio-medical waste is disposed of daily using the Institute's incinerator as per guidelines to prevent any harm to all living organism and the environment.
"If any errors occur, they are rectified as soon as possible," Usharani stated and appealed to the people to extend their support to JNIMS authority.
Meanwhile, Incinerator Plant JNIMS technical supervisor Oinam Arju informed that the general biomedical waste generated in JNIMS on daily basis is collected in different colour-coded bins from various wards.
The waste is then gathered and incinerated, while the general wastes are stored at temporary sheds to be collected by an NGO on a daily basis.
He disclosed that JNIMS generates around 30-35 kg of biomedical waste daily, explaining that the incinerator plant has the capacity to dispose of 100kg of biomedical waste in one hour and in the case of liquid waste, the same is managed by one 50KLD and 10KLD, and two 5KLD.The smoke released from the incinerator plant is carbon-free and does not affect the surroundings in any form, he added.
