Drivers cease service, call NH-37 bandh

In denunciation of the recent attack on petroleum tankers along NH 37 (Imphal-Jiribam road) by suspected Kuki militants, which resulted in injuries to two drivers and damage to five trucks, drivers of goods trucks operating along the highway have declared an indefinite steering off agitation and NH-37 bandh, effective from Friday 6 am .
Highlighting their grievances, large number of drivers congregated at Jiribam Sorok Atingbi to stage demonstration, vehemently condemned recent assault on transporters and criticised alleged lackadaisical security arrangements along the national highway, despite repeated appeals for enhanced measures.
The drivers highlighted the frequent targeting of transporters by armed outfit along the NH 37 and emphasised the urgent need for effective security measures to safeguard the lives and assets of those traversing the route.
They announced their intention to continue the strike until the government provides written assurances for enhancing security measures with full authority to combat illegal activities.
Furthermore, the drivers demanded adequate compensation to victims of illegal activities, including those injured in the recent attack.
They called upon drivers of all transportation services to cease normal operations and join the bandh in solidarity.
They also appealed to all transporter associations, civil society organisations (CSOs), Meira Paibi group and local clubs to extend support to the protest.
